Royal Family Transfer of Office
CANCELLED at Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine
This event has been CANCELLED. Due to the coronavirus emergency, the City of St. Augustine has prohibited events and public gatherings through May 8, 2020. Visit here for up-to-date information about cancellations and closures.
This St. Augustine heritage event commemorates the city's Spanish origins and the reign of Queen Marianna, King Juan Carlos, and Princess Margarita Maria. St. Augustine residents enact the parts of the Royal Family in full costume and pass the scepter in a beautiful annual ceremony just before Easter. This year, the transfer of royal duties will take place on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at the west courtyard of the Cathedral Basilica on Cathedral Place in downtown St. Augustine.
Queen Marianna, King Juan Carlos and Princess Margarita Maria were the Spanish royal family at the time of the Castillo de San Marcos construction in 1672. It was Queen Marianna who saw the need for a stronger fortification in the New World, especially after the 1668 attack by English pirate Robert Searle, and commissioned the building of a masonry fort.
This event is open to the public.
When: Thursday, April 2, 2020, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Cathedral Basilica is located at 38 Cathedral Place in St. Augustine FL 32084.
