1. Tips on Getting Around

This is your number one money-saver. Downtown parking during Nights of Lights can be expensive and frustrating to find, these tips make getting around easier and more affordable.

Free Park & Ride Shuttles

The City of St. Augustine offers free shuttle services from designated perimeter lots. This is your best friend for avoiding parking costs and traffic headaches. You'll save on fuel, fees, and headaches. Check out our Nights of Lights Parking Guide for more information and get dropped off right near the action.

Arrive Early

If you must park downtown, aim for early afternoon (before 3:00 p.m.) to snag a spot before they fill up. You might find cheaper rates before the evening rush.

Leave Late

Leaving later after the crowds disperse can also save you from surge pricing on ride-shares and taxis, if that's your plan.

2. Free Self-Guided Walking Tour

While there are some great reasons to catch one of the Nights of Lights Guided Tours, one of the best ways to experience the lights is on foot, and it costs nothing! Check out this quick four-point tour. If you're looking for a more detailed plan, browse our Nights of Lights Itineraries.

Explore Side Streets

Don't be afraid to wander off the main streets. Many charming historic homes, art galleries, and bed and breakfasts on streets like Aviles Street or Cedar Street have beautiful displays.

3. Pack Smart for Snacks & Drinks

Avoid impulse buys and inflated prices for refreshments. Plan ahead with these four easy snack tips.

  1. Bring a Water Bottle: Stay hydrated without buying countless plastic bottles.
  2. Pack Snacks: Granola bars, fruit, or small bags of chips can curb hunger between meals and save you from pricey street vendor snacks.
  3. Hot Drink Thermos: Consider bringing a thermos of hot cocoa, coffee, or tea to sip on as you walk. It's cozy and keeps costs down.
  4. If you're staying at a hotel or bed & breakfast in town, be sure to take advantage of any snack and refreshment options they have.

4. Dine Smart – Local & Casual Options

Eating out can really add up, but St. Augustine has options for every budget.

  • Lunch Deals: Opt for a larger, cheaper lunch and a lighter, more casual dinner (or even just dessert) after the lights. Check out our restaurants guide to help you plan ahead.
  • Local Favorites: Seek out establishments popular with locals, often just a block or two off the main tourist streets. Tucked away places like Pizza Time, Kookaburra—Downtown (for coffee and pastries), or O'Steen's Restaurant (famous for fried shrimp) generally offer more bang for your buck.
  • Casual Eateries: Many spots on St. George Street offer quick, affordable bites like ice cream, pizza, pastries, or sandwiches.
  • Happy Hour: Look for early evening happy hour specials if you plan to have a drink. Learn more about Happy Hour options around town.

Pro-tip: Be sure to bring cash even if your plan is to pay with card. A few eateries downtown only accept cash, and it's handy to have some on hand in case the retailer's card machine is down.

5. Look for Deals & Discounts on Guided Tours

While walking is free, if you desire a guided Nights of Lights tour, be strategic.

  • Check for Discounts
  • Consider Shorter/Cheaper Tours: Instead of the priciest options, look for shorter trolley rides or smaller group electric vehicle tours that might have lower per-person costs. Some companies may offer discounts for military, seniors, or locals.

7. Travel Off-Peak (Even During Nights of Lights)

  • Lodging Savings: Hotels and B&Bs often have lower rates on weekdays, especially Sunday through Thursday. The deepest discounts usually come in January after the holiday rush.
  • Fewer Crowds, Better Experience: Less crowded means less waiting, a more relaxed pace, and a chance to truly appreciate the lights without feeling rushed.
